PURPOSE: To prevent damage of a tool, by a method wherein the drive source of a feed device is provided with a drive source during energizing and a drive source during service interruption, and simultaneously with service interruption, a distance between axes of the tool and a gear material is rapidly traversed, enlarged, and displaced by means of the drive source during service interruption.
CONSTITUTION: A distance between the axes of a drive shaft 2 of a tool 1 and a machining gear shaft 4 of a gear material 3 to be machined is linearly displaced by a feed device 5 so that fine feed can be shifted. During energization, the gear shaft 4 is moved forward and backward by a hydraulic cylinder 8 through switching of a solenoid valve 13. During backward movement, the cylinder is moved backward only in a rapid traverse manner by a control device 20. During service interruption, the line of the solenoid valve 13 is closed, a solenoid valve 14 is brought into a state, shown, through the force of a spring, and by means of an oil pressure accumulated in an accumulator 7, an inter-axis distance is rapidly traversed and enlarged. Thus, though the normal set numbers of revolutions of the tool 1 and the gear material 3 are disturbed due to service interruption, cutting of the tool 1 through the gear material 3 is prevented from occurring, and a tool and the like is prevented from damage.
