Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a composition which is nontoxic and has a fine particle size and improved hue quality by mixing a rare earth metal carbonate or oxycarbonate with an alkali metal compound and heating the mixture in the presence of a specified gas.
CONSTITUTION: A rare earth metal carbonate or oxycarbonate is mixed with 0.1-50 mol.% alkali metal compound, and the mixture is heated at 500-900°C for 2 hr to 15 min in the presence of H2S and/or CS2 gas of a partial pressure of 0.1-105 Pa to obtain a coloring pigment comprising a rare earth metal sulfide base composition having a mean particle diameter of a sulfide of 1.5 μm or below and wholly consisting of monocrystalline particles.
