To provide a rare gas discharge lamp, a backlight device and a liquid crystal display device excellent in insulation characteristics and mounting property on the backlight device and constitutable for good light modulating.
A discharge medium of rare gas containing xenon as the main ingredient, is sealed into an interior of this lamp. A pair of outer electrodes 3 are provided separating and opposite to each other on an outer surface of a translucent discharge case 1 provided with a phosphor layer 2 on an inner surface side of the translucent discharge case 1. A translucent part 4 for guiding light is formed between the pair of outer electrodes 3. A transparent insulating coating 5 covering the translucent discharge case 1 and the pair of outer electrodes 3 in contact therewith, and a transparent heat-shrinkable tube 6 placed outside the transparent insulation 5 are provided. A reflective layer 7 containing α alumina is formed on an inner surface of the discharge case 1 and by including α alumina in the phosphor layer 2, characteristics of darkness is improved. A protective layer 8 having γ alumina as the main ingredient is formed between the reflective layer 7 and the phosphor layer 2 to restrict flicker of luminosity at light modulating. Flicker of luminosity in light modulating can be prevented by adding krypton to xenon and sealing it.
