PURPOSE: To enable to rapidly feed a paper by various amounts, by a method wherein a feeding pawl engaged to a ratchet wheel at one end thereof is provided with a multi-stage stopping part at the other end, and an electromagnet armature engaged to the stopping part is provided.

CONSTITUTION: In the condition wherein the ratchet wheel 41 is fully fed by a cam 47, even when the cam 47 is further rotated, the feeding pawl 42a is not reset since it is blocked by the tip of the armature 51, so that the paper is not fed. When a solenoid coil 50 is excited to attract the armature 51, the feeding pawl 42a is reset along the cam 47. When the armature 51 is reset at a preset timing, it is engaged to a stepped part D1. At the top dead center of the cam 47 continuing to rotate, the pawl 42a is moved to the side of the ratchet wheel 41, and the latter is fed by a one-tooth amount. To feed the ratchet wheel 41 by a two-teeth amount, the period of attracting the armature 51 is prolonged, whereby the tip of the armature 51 is engaged to a stepped part D2 of the feeding pawl 42a, and the ratched wheel 41 can be fed by the two-teeth amount by rotating the cam 47.
