A CCD camera 16 located in a housing 12 provided in the rear part of a vehicle 14 picks up an image from an obstruction in rear of the vehicle and produce an image signal from which an infrared sensor 20 in the housing 12 measures a distance to the obstruction from which the image is picked up, and delivers measuring data. A monitor device 30 provided in the passenger compartment 14 for displaying thereon the image signal from the CCD camera 16 and the measured data in a single screen. An illumination intensity sensor 26 is provided to the housing 12 for detecting an illumination intensity, and accordingly, halogen lamps 22, 24 are turned on when the illumination intensity detected by the sensor 26 becomes lower than a predetermined value.
