To provide a method of operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine for increasing the net output and improving the net fuel consumption rate by reducing the frictional loss power in the indicated output of the same size as the current one.
The reciprocating internal combustion engine has an output characteristic of generating the maximum indicated output PM when the rotational frequency of the engine is a first prescribed value N1. An output reducing means of the internal combustion engine reduces the output of the engine when the rotational frequency of the engine exceeds a second prescribed rotational frequency N2 so that the necessary indicated output PS of the internal combustion engine (the output characteristic is shown in the solid line) is obtained when the rotational frequency is the second prescribed value N2, lower than the first prescribed value N1. Therefore, the high rotational frequency zone among the rotational frequency zone R for the internal combustion engine to be operated is set lower than the value N3 of the engine rotational frequency for generating the necessary indicated output PS (maximum indicated output Pm) in the current technology (the output characteristic thereof is shown in the broken line), and the frictional loss power PL in the indicated output of the same size as the current one is reduced smaller than the current one, so that the net output is increased and the net fuel consumption rate is improved.
