Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a single reciprocating type internal combustion engine selectively capable of spark ignition using a gas fuel and compression ignition using a liquid fuel optionally by providing a cooler and a heater for combustion air, and the like.

CONSTITUTION: When an internal combustion engine 1 is operated with spark ignition by using a gas fuel, the gas fuel is made to flow in a conduit 13 and mixed in a carburetor 12 with air flowing in a conduit 18 and cooled in an air cooler 19. And this low temperature mixture is fed to a combustion chamber 3 via a conduit 11 and a piston is efficiently operated with spark ignition on in ignition plug 4. On the other hand, when a liquid fuel is injected for operating the internal combustion engine 1 with compression ignition, the liquid fuel in a tank 42 is made to flow to each conduit 43 and 39, and injected from a nozzle 5 to the inside of the combustion chamber 3 with the operation of a pump 9. In this case, the air flowing through the conduit 18 and compressed with a supercharger 17 is heated in an air heater 20 with cooling drain water running in a conduit 22.
