PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recognition device capable of further accurately recognizing a content of characters or codes on the basis of imaging information corresponding to a captured image obtained by capturing the image of the characters or codes.SOLUTION: The recognition device extracts a character area that includes characters and the like and has a rectangular outer edge circumscribing the characters and the like, along with the characters and the like on the basis of image data obtained by capturing an image of a license plate representing the characters and the like, the content of which should be recognized.
