PURPOSE: To simplify preprocessing and to improve reading accuracy in a character recognizing device to read out characters automatically, by deciding a reference pattern set to which an input character set is to be included and recognizing each character finally.
CONSTITUTION: A read input character group is temporally stored in a storage device 10 and these stored characters are taken out from the storage device 10 one by on and sent to character recognizing parts 21W2n. Since each of the character recognizing parts has a set of reference pattern, each part outputs the recognized result and reliable degree of an input character and stores them in corresponding storage circuits 31W3n. A final recognision part 40 specifies the shapes of the input character group from the reliable degrees stored in the storage circuits 31W3n and outputs the finally recognized result.
