A dot impact printer 10 is configured so that the ribbon cartridge 50 storing an ink ribbon 51 can be mounted. The ribbon cartridge 50 is constituted to take up the ink ribbon 51 by holding the ink ribbon by a driving roller and a following roller. The dot impact printer 10 rotates the driving roller of the ribbon cartridge 50 by carrying out a distinguishing mode of the cartridge mounting state. At the same time, the dot impact printer 10 detects an operation state of the following roller and distinguishes the mounting state of the ribbon cartridge 50 on the basis of the operation state of the detected following roller.
