PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress consumption of a cleaning material, to prolong a product life, or to reduce replacement frequency of the cleaning material by performing appropriate cleaning control according to status of a transportation belt.SOLUTION: A recording device comprises cleaning means having a cleaning material for cleaning a transportation belt by being brought into contact with the transportation belt transporting a medium to be recorded, and being constituted so as to be able to execute update operation for updating a portion brought into contact with the transportation belt from an already used portion to an unused portion in the cleaning material while being capable of switching between a contact state in which the cleaning material is brought into contact with the transportation belt and a non-contact state in which the cleaning material is not brought into contact therewith. Control means controlling the cleaning means can execute first cleaning control not performing the update operation during cleaning operation of the transportation belt and second cleaning control performing the update operation during the cleaning operation of the transportation belt.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
