PURPOSE: To increase the storage capacity by providing the plural different number of sectors in the radial direction of a disk based on a minimum radius of a disk on which a signal is recorded/reproduced at a prescribed error rate or below at a highest frequency.
CONSTITUTION: A highest recording and reproducing frequency (f0) equivalent to the optional number of sectors is selected at an outermost circumferential track of a disk 2 and a ratio (S/N) of a reproduction output to noise is measured. Then number of sectors recorded/reproduced on a track 101a finally and the frequency f0 to satisfy the S/N warranting a required error rate are decided. Then the number of sectors is sequentially decreased, and the radial position is sequentially toward the inner circumferential side at a highest recording and reproducing frequency equivalent to each number of sectors to measure the S/N thereby obtaining a minimum radial position. Thus, the number of sectors with respect to the radial position of the disk 2 and the highest recording and reproducing frequency equivalent to the number are decided and the storage capacity per one device is increased.
