Abstract:

PURPOSE: To simultaneously adsorption remove catalyst component Co, Mn and Br- by contacting mother liquor of liquid phase oxidation of alkylbenzenes to an anion exchange resin and carrying out distillation to recover almost all of residula undissociable Br2 as well as to remove heavy metal and org. impurities as reaction harmful components.

CONSTITUTION: Mothor liquor of liquid phase oxidation of alkylbenzenes e.g. for production of terephthalic acid from paraxylene is contacted to an anion exchange resin such as quat. ammonium type strongly basic resin to adsorb catalyst components Co, Mn and Br-, which are recovered by elution. The mother liquor thus treated is then distilled to recover a lower aliph. monocarboxylic acid such as acetic acid. The remaining mother liquor is further distilled under conditions in which the relation between vapor temp. and distillation press. satisfies the equation to recover residual undissociable bromine in a high yield as well as to separation recover heavy metal impurities such as iron, Ni, Cr, etc. and high b.p. oxidation by-products.
