PURPOSE: To provide a process for the recovery of citric acid having improved productivity and simplicity compared with conventional process and enabling the recirculation of a crude product mixture and the reduction of the amount of reagent and the operation cost.
CONSTITUTION: This process for the recovery of citric acid from a crude product mixture having low purity comprises (a) a step to produce a concentrated citric acid solution by treating a crude product mixture containing citric acid and having low purity, (b) a step to form an aqueous solution called as mother liquor by adding a sufficient amount of a strong acid or its salt to the concentrated citric acid solution and separating the crystallized citric acid and (c) a step to separate the obtained citric acid crystal from the mother liquor.
