To obtain azo(oxy)benzene useful as an intermediate for chemical industry, etc., in high efficiency by the reduction coupling of nitrobenzene in vapor phase at a high temperature using heterogeneous catalytic action of a specific redox catalyst having reduced or partially reduced form.
Azobenzene and azoxybenzene are produced by the reduction coupling of nitrobenzene in vapor phase at a high temperature using heterogeneous catalytic action of a specific redox catalyst having reduced or partially reduced form. The reducing catalyst contains one or more active metals such as Bi, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Pb, Mo, Ce, U, Sn, Sb, Cu, La, W, Nb, Pd, Pt, Ni and In. Nitrobenzene is passed on the redox catalyst together with one or more kinds of gaseous reducing agents free from hydrogen for the deoxidization of nitrobenzene. The average oxidized state of the active metal of the redox catalyst is lower than the maximum oxidized state stable under each reaction condition by ≥0.5 before introducing nitrobenzene together with the reducing agent.
