To shade off the image of a light source, to prevent the image on a liquid crystal display device from being shaded off, and to secure the resolution, by forming a diffusion surface on a side close to a transparent electrode on the bottom surface of a planar diffuser.
A metallic electrode 3 formed on the upper surface of a glass substrate 2 reflects incident light. Further, the transparent electrode 5 and color filters 6 corresponding to colors of pixels are formed on this electrode through a layer of a liquid crystal 4 at a prescribed pitch. Further, the planar diffuser 7 is formed on the upper surface of the color filters 6. The planar diffuser 7 is constituted of an upper side glass substrate 8, transparent resin layers 9, 10 having a diffusive function of light and a cover glass 11. The transparent resin layers 9, 10 consist of resin layers with different refractive indexes, and random raggedness is formed beforehand on their joint surface as a diffusive surface. Then, a polarizing plate 12 and a reflection preventive film 13 are formed on the upper surface of this planar diffuser 7.
