To provide a refrigerator capable of maintaining the coefficient of performance at the maximum value even if discharge pressure and absorption pressure in a multistage compression mechanism are changed and preventing occurrence of failure.
This refrigerator has a main refrigerating circuit provided with the compression mechanisms 1, 2 connected in series, a condenser 3, an intermediate cooling device 11, an expansion means 4 for the cooling device, and a cooling device 5 and circulating refrigerant in it, an intermediate cooling device circuit for joining refrigerant branched on the downstream side of the intermediate cooling device 11 with an intermediate join point 6 between the compression mechanisms 1 and 2 through an expansion means 12 for the intermediate cooling device and the intermediate cooling device 11, an absorption volume changing means of the compression mechanisms 1, 2, absorption pressure detection means 100, 101, a discharge pressure detection means 102, and a control means for controlling the absorption volume changing means for making compression ratios being ratios of absorption pressure to discharge pressure of the compression mechanisms 1, 2 equal. For example, when current compression ratio is smaller (larger) than target compression ratio, absorption volume is maintained or increased (reduced).
