A second inner back pressure chamber (S21) facing the back surface of an end plate (71a) of a second piston (71) and communicating with a discharge space (S1), and a second outer back pressure chamber (S22) facing the back surface of the end plate (71a) of the second piston (71) and communicating with an inner compression chamber (C2b) are formed in a second compression mechanism (70) in a higher stage side of an air conditioner that carries out a two-stage compression refrigeration cycle. In the air conditioner (10), during a prescribed period in the middle of pressure rising after starting a first compression mechanism (50) and the second compression mechanism (70), a suction pressure reduction operation is carried out, in which the suction side of the second compression mechanism (70) and the suction side of the first compression mechanism (50) are communicated to reduce the pressure of a sucked fluid in the second compression mechanism (70).
