To eliminate the need of pre-treatment such as crushing and maintain a constant compaction by a method wherein refuse is fed into a melting furnace after compacted at the bottom of a hopper in two steps, and the compacting direction of the second step perpendicularly intersects that of the first step.
A compactor 3 is installed at the bottom of a feed hopper 1 as a first step compaction mechanism. A piston 3a and a die opposite to the piston 3a of the compactor 3 are cylindrical. Refuse is lightly compacted so that its volume is reduced to about one third. A compactor 4 as a second step compaction mechanism is arranged in the direction perpendicularly intersecting the compacting direction of the compactor 3 so that the cylindrical refuse compacted at the first step is compacted in the axial direction. A gate 5 that is opened and shut by a hydraulic cylinder is provided at the outlet of the compactor 4. The refuse block compacted in two steps is pushed into a tubular seal part 6 to seal off a melting furnace 10, that prevents the outside air from entering and a gas generated in the melting furnace 10 from leaking outside the furnace 10.
