To provide a remote monitoring system that achieves automatic updates of a control program in a natura way without impeding the normal operation of a home device for monitoring and for communication or increasing the cost of communication.

The remote monitoring system 1 includes the home device 2 that sends home images via the Internet 7, and a server device 4 that sends commands to the home device 2 and receives images from the home device 2 to send the images to a user terminal 3. The home device 2 includes two nonvolatile storage means 24, one for updates and the other for backups, to store a control program, a temporary storage means 23 for temporarily storing an update program, and a control means 20 for controlling communication and the execution of commands, etc. When receiving a command from the server device 4, the control means 20 receives the version number of the update program, and when sending the result of execution of the command to the server device 4 based on the result of comparison by a version comparison means, receives the update program through two-way communication.
