PURPOSE: To reduce the content of sulfur in org. sulfide by bringing org. sulfide having a chemically bonded sulfur atom into contact with a catalyst such as an amine or zeolite to perform disproportionation to obtain sulfur and sulfide lower sulfur rank.
CONSTITUTION: An org. sulfide pref. represented by formula RSSaSR1 (wherein R and R1 are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or hydroxyalkyl and 0<a≤13) is supplied to a reactor A along with a dissolved catalyst or supplied to the reactor A containing a solid catalyst and the top part of the reactor A is held to 120-140°C and the bottom part thereof is held to 160-220°C to perform disproportionation. Org. sulfide is decomposed and a volatile component enters a fractional distiller B and condenced in a condenser C to circulate heavy matter. Generated sulfur is collected in a receiver E and unreacted org. sulfide and a hydrocarbon solvent are separated in a secondary re-recovery region F to be recirculated. As the catalyst, an amine, an alkali metal hydroxide and zeolite are used. A sulfide of lower sulfur rank further absorbs sulfur to be made reusable.
