Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable the efficient and easy reorientation of the ferroelectric or antiferroelectric liquid crystal sealed into a liquid crystal sealed with the ferroelectric or antiferroelectric liquid crystal to be conducted by heating this liquid crystal element, then rapidly cooling the entire part of the liquid crystal sealed region of the liquid crystal element from one surface side of the liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal element 10 is taken up from the surface of a heating plate 20 when the antiferroelectric liquid crystal in the liquid crystal element 10 attains an isotropic phase. The liquid crystal element 10 is then immediately placed flat on the surface of a rapid cooling plate 21 to rapidly cool the liquid crystal element 10 from the heating temp. to the temp. of the cooling plate 21. The antiferroelectric liquid crystal in the liquid crystal element 10 is rapidly cooled in the direction perpendicular to the normal direction of a smectic layer structure when the liquid crystal element 10 is rapidly cooled from its one surface side. This antiferroelectric liquid crystal shifts rapidly from the isotropic phase to the chiral smectic C phase exhibiting antiferroelectric property. The antiferroelectric liquid crystal is thus reoriented to the orientation state having the smectic layer structure.
