Abstract:

To form a protective aluminide coating on turbine parts in order for use in gas turbine applications while eliminating or suppressing the growth of the film into a base material.

The aluminide coating system used for restoring the aluminide coating on turbine airfoils undergoing refurbishment is disclosed. Such film system forms and restores the aluminide coating system without consuming the base metal of the airfoil undergoing repair. The layer of an elemental metal is at first required to be deposited over the cleaned substrate in order to obtain such film system. The metal to be deposited is matched to the composition of the substrate and comes with aluminum during the subsequent aluminizing treatment to form the protective aluminide coating. The thickness of the metal to be deposited needs be limited to such a thickness at which excess voids are not produced in the subsequent heat treatment.
