Abstract:
PURPOSE: To integrate plural medium attachment units(MAU) having repeaters and to provide port expansion capability. CONSTITUTION: A discrete repeater 50 which has a predetermined number of ports 60 and 621 to 628 includes an extension port 100 which allows one or more similar devices to be connected, so as to generate a single repeater unit with an increased number of ports. The extension port includes two bidirectional channels DAT and JAM, one output channel REQ, and two input channels ACK and COL. An arbiter function makes connections with respective discrete repeaters, which assert proper signals allowing the discrete repeaters constituting the repeater unit to switch data and collision information. This switching of data is used by a state machine, which provides a repeater unit for distributed repeaters and relay functions.
