PURPOSE: To provide a character input device detecting inputted signal strings for which plural character kinds coexist and converting them to optimum character strings.
CONSTITUTION: Key code strings inputted from an input device 102 are stored in an input key code buffer 103. When the change of the character kind is detected by a character kind change detection part 105, words and the character kind are judged from the input key code strings by using a word dictionary in a word detection processing part 106. In a character code conversion part 110, by the contents of a cycle storage part 108 and a dictionary key code register 109, the input key code strings are converted into respectively correct character codes and display is performed. Thus, the need of specifying a character mode by a user is eliminated and character input efficiency is enhanced.
