To provide a retarder system which has small wavelength dependence.
Two rhombohedral bodies in a parallelogram shape are placed in such fixed directions that an incident electromagnetic beam is totally reflected at least once inside each of the rhombohedral bodies, and a first surface RS1 and a third surface RS3, and a second surface RS2 and a fourth surface RS4 thereof are substantially parallel with each other. A beam of electromagnetic radiation made incident substantially perpendicular to the first surface of one of those rhombohedral bodies travels to be internally reflected by the fourth surface RS4 and the second surface RS2 of the one of those rhombohedral bodies, and then to be emitted from the third surface of the one of those rhombohedral bodies, the emission direction of the beam being substantially perpendicular to the first surface of the other of the rhombohedral bodies. Successively, the beam is internally reflected by the second surface and the fourth surface of the rhombohedral body in the parallelogram shape to be emitted from the third surface of the other of the rhombohedral bodies.
