PURPOSE: To retrieve storage addresses on a recording body without storing in an external memory by calculating the storage addresses on the recording body on which file names are recorded on the basis of memory addresses of the external memory in which the file names are stored.

CONSTITUTION: The file name of a disired file is inputted on a keyboard 6 so as to retrieve the desired file. The microcomputer incorporated in an inspecting device 5 operates for retrieval to read file names out of a semiconductor memory in the order of memory addresses "0", "1", "2"... and collate them with the specified file name successively. When the file name coincident with the specified file name is read out of the semiconductor memory, the memory address in which the file name is stored is calculated and the storage address on a floppy disk where the file name is recorded is calculated and displayed on a display part 8 to designated the floppy disk to be taken out of a storage box 1.
