Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a waveguide with large turnout angle by forming the thickness of the center part of a first rib part and that of the inside part of a branching part thinner than that of another part. CONSTITUTION:A Y-branch optical waveguide is comprised of a rib part 3 for main optical waveguide and rib parts 4, 5 for branch waveguide branched in Y shape. And a recessed part 6 is formed at the branching point TP of the center part of the rib part 3 for main optical waveguide and the rib parts 4, 5 for branch, and the thickness of the part is formed thinner than that of another part. Therefore, the overlapping of the field distribution pattern of a waveguide mode in the neighborhood of the branching point can be expanded, and the loss of light can be suppressed even when the turnout angle is increased, thereby, the turnout angle can be increased. Therefore, the dimension of an optical device can be compressed and degree of integration can be heightened by using such waveguide.
