To provide a device which can positively detect a tip portion of each ink portion and can recognize printing characteristics of each ink ribbon by employing a simple structure, and to provide the ribbon for use in the device.
In the ribbon for the printing device, which is obtained by arranging the plurality of colors of ink portions 66a, 66b, 66c applicable to color printing, along a longitudinal direction, the tip portion of the ink portion 66a to be printed first has a first detection mark attached thereto, corresponding to the printing characteristics of the ribbon. A main body 3 of the printing device comprises sensor units S1, S2 for reading the first detection mark, and a control means 1 for carrying out printing control corresponding to the printing characteristics of the ribbon upon reception of signals from the sensor units S1, S2.
