To solve such a problem that, when a groove of a grooved roll used in a paper machine, or the like, became shallow because of wear of the grooved roll, the grooved roll was once ground, until the outer peripheral surface of the grooved roll became smooth, in order to remove the groove, and then a groove of required depth was newly cut.
A base 3 of a groove cutting machine which is slidable in the axial direction of the roll is arranged on a fixed base c (abrasive wheel spindle stock) of a roll grinder. A cutting saw blade 1 and a guide member 10 having the same thickness as the width of the roll groove are arranged on the base 3 of the groove cutting machine. The cutting saw blade is moved along the outer peripheral surface of the roll together with the base of the groove cutting machine by means of the guide member. At the same time, a carriage is moved in the axial direction of the roll so that the cutting saw blade can cut the bottom of the groove. Because the guide member accurately guides the cutting saw blade into the old groove, only the bottom of the old groove can be cut without spreading the width of the groove. Further, in the case of a grooved roll having a groove with holes, burrs produced around the holes can be removed by cutting the bottom of the grove in the direction opposite to that in cutting the bottom of the groove.
