PURPOSE: To produce a roll having a circular collar-shaped projecting part provided with wear resistance, strength and toughness by fitting split rings into a groove having a flat bottom of the roll body and joining said rings by welding then providing a hard build-up layer on the circumferential side surface of the ring.
CONSTITUTION: A groove 5 is circumferentially provided on the outside circumferential surface of a roll body 1 and ≥1 flat parts 6 are formed on the base of the groove 5. Segmental pieces 2-1, 2-2 formed by dividing radially a steel ring having a circular outside circumference and an inside circumference coinciding with the base shape of said groove 5 to ≥2 pieces are fitted into said groove 5 and is made into a ring shape. The contact parts of the pieces 2-1, 2-2 are then joined by welding to each other and are securely shrinkage-fitted to the groove part by the shrinkage effect in the stage of the welding, by which a circular collar-shaped projecting part 2 is formed. A hard build-up layer 4 is thereafter formed by hard build-up welding or thermal spraying on the circumferential side surface of the part 2. The roll which is provided with wear resistance, strength and toughness in said part 2, permits free replacement of only the part 2 and has the permanently usable body part 1 is thus obtd.
