PURPOSE: To prevent the horizontal bend of upper and lower small-diameter work rolls and to provide the substantial effect thereof by controlling the horizontal force to be exerted to said rolls of a 5-stages rolling mill which offsets one of said rolls from a rolling reduction line.
CONSTITUTION: The upper small-diameter work roll 1 is held by cylinders 7a, 7b in the position of an offset (e) on the outlet side of a sheet material 6. The horizontal force F acts on the roll 1 when the rolling operation is executed in this stage. The force F is detected by load cells 9a, 9b and is determined as a load difference by a calculator 17. The detected load is compared and calculated with the signal (prescribed value or 0) from a setter 11 and the signal is sent to amplifiers 12, 13 respectively, when there is a difference. The signal is calculated with the signal from a measuring instrument 14 in the amplifiers 12, 13 and is fed to a controller 15. The controller 15 outputs a command to servocontrol valves 16a, 16b to operate the cylinders 7a, 7b in accordance with said signal to control the horizontal force F3 detected by the calculator 17 via the load cells 9a, 9b so as to attain the value equal to the value of the setter 11 or a slight range.
