To provide a rope shaking detection device for an elevator capable of detecting amplitudes of horizontal shaking in all directions of a rope, enabled without increasing a number of sensors.SOLUTION: A rope shaking detection device comprises: a measurement range sensor 52, arranged at an arrangement position out of a hoistway passage of a car 26 and a balance weight 28, for measuring directions and distances from the arrangement position to objects existing in a horizontal plane including the arrangement position in the hoistway passage, and for outputting the directions and the distances as position information; detection means for detecting position coordinates, in said horizontal plane, of a rope part of either of a main rope part 24A for hanging the car 26 or a balance rope part 32A hanged down from the car 26 from the position information output from said measurement range sensor; and calculation means for calculating amplitude, in said horizontal plane, of horizontal shaking of the rope part being shaken horizontally, according to said position coordinates of said rope part detected by said detection means.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
