To provide technology for accurately adjusting the preload of a rotating shaft in a short time.
The rotating shaft is rotatably supported on a housing member via a pair of tapered bearings, where a deformable space adjusting material is arranged between the bearings. A method is provided for adjusting the preload of the rotating shaft while fastening a nut threaded to the rotating shaft to give axial thrust to the pair of tapered bearing and the space adjusting material. It comprises using a fastening means for fastening the nut with preset fastening torque T0 and then fastening it up to a preset fastening angle θ0 (S3-S6), and stopping the fastening when a variation ΔT of the fastening torque in predetermined angles Δθ exceeds a predetermined threshold value while further fastening the nut (S7-S9), using a measuring means for measuring a preload value R for the rotating shaft, and using the fastening means for fastening the nut by a fastening angle θf corresponding to a difference between the measured preload value and a target preload value (S10-S12).
