Abstract:
Fuel-saving tires have spread, and tires including silica as a filler are becoming increasingly common. Modified solution-polymerized SBRs for silica are widely used for the purpose of using silica as a filler. Meanwhile, emulsion-polymerized SBRs do not act on silica, and there is a desire for a modified emulsion-polymerized SBR usable in silica-containing rubber compositions for reducing fuel consumption. A radical-polymerizable monomer, e.g., a conjugated diene, is radical-polymerized in the presence of at least one compound selected from among xanthogene compounds, sulfenamide compounds, thiuram compounds, dithiocarbamic acid compounds, and thiazole compounds to thereby obtain a modified polymer having functional groups. A rubber composition containing a modified emulsion-polymerized SBR thus-obtained is highly effective in reducing fuel consumption.
