Abstract:
PURPOSE:To control the orientation of a liq. crystal with higher precision and to obtain a high-contrast picture display by electrifying the rubbing cloth and specifying the surface density of charge. CONSTITUTION:The rubbing cloth for producing a liq. crystal element is electrified, and the surface density of charge is controlled to >=5X10<-11>C/cm<2>. The absolute value of the density of charge is preferably controlled to >=5X10<-11>C/cm<2> or more preferably to >=1X10<-11>C/cm<2>. The cloth is preferably made of fibers, and the fiber sheet having different polarities on the front and rear is more preferably used than that having a single polarity to produce a better result. Consequently, the orientation of liq. crystal in the element is controlled with high precision, and a high-contrast picture display is obtained.
