PURPOSE: To carry out the running-n of a steering device in a short time while restraining one side hitting state by giving a pre-load in a direction for reinforcing the meshing of a gear to a steering gear device and also operating the gear device while adding a vibration for increasing/decreasing as meshed amount to a meshing part.
CONSTITUTION: At the running-in work time for smoothing a respective member after assembly of the steering gear device 10 of a rack pinion type, a fluid pressure is given to the pressure room 39 of a push cylinder 3 and also an ultrasonic wave is inputted to the ultrasonic wave vibration piece 41 of an excitation device 40 and the normal/reverse rotation of the input shaft 15 of a gear layer 10 is repeated by a rotation drive device under such state that a pushing force is acted in the axial direction of a rack guide 14. At this time, a pre-load in a direction for making the strong contact of the gear between a rack 13 and a pinion 12 is given to the rack guide 14 and also a vibration for increasing/decreasing a working amount is added. The contact and non- contact of a working part is repeated b this vibration and initial smoothing is obtained in a short time even at the small pre-load smoothing time.
