To provide a rust proof coating composition which is capable of forming a film having good adhesiveness to metal parts and excellent in rust-proofing properties when coated thereon.
The rust proof coating composition is prepared by using an emulsion containing particles having a heterogeneous structure obtained by multistage emulsion polymerization in the presence of an anionic surfactant. In the composition, at least one phase of the particles having the heterogeneous structure is formed of a copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerizing a cationic functional group-containing monomer and a copolymerizable ,-ethylenically unsaturated monomer except carboxyl group-containing monomers, at least one phase of the particles having the heterogeneous structure is formed of a copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerizing a carboxyl group-containing monomer and a copolymerizable ,-ethylenically unsaturated monomer except cationically functional group-containing monomers, and the sum total of the cationic functional group-containing monomer units and the carboxyl group-containing monomer units in the particles having the heterogeneous structure is 10 mass% based on the total monomer units of the particles having the heterogeneous structure.
