A saddle stitching stapler includes: driver mechanism units 21a, 21b driving staples to bound sheets; clinchers 44, 44 provided at positions facing the driver mechanism units 21a, 21b respectively through a traveling path 43 for passing the sheets to be bound 3; and a driving mechanism 50 moving the driver mechanism units 21a, 21b to approach to and separate from the clinchers 44, 44. In the operation of moving respective driver mechanism units 21a, 21b in a direction of approaching to and separating from the clincher 44, 44 to clamp the sheets to be bound 3 on the clinchers 44, 44, and successively driving staples to the clamped sheets to be bound 3, the driving mechanism 50 operates the diver mechanism units 21a, 21b so that the staples are driven to the sheets to be bound 3 with a phase difference while overlapping the times for clamping the sheets to be bound 3.
