CONSTITUTION: When a passenger is in romping about when getting on a step plate 3, and a skirt guard 21 is kicked, the skirt guard 21 deforms instantly, and the deformation is absorbed by a play (β), and the deformation is not exerted on the basic part 31 of a bracket 29, and a detection switch 47 is turned off, and the operation state of the escalator is secured. When a shoe is nipped in the gap (α) between the escalator 3 and the skirt guard 21, the skirt guard 21 is flexibly deformed largely as shown by the chained line, and an operating arm 45 is pressed in the direction of arrow (a). Accordingly, the detection switch 47 is turned on, and a driving motor is turned by the detection signal supplied from the detection switch 47, and the movement of the escalator is brought into stop, and safety is secured.
