PURPOSE: To facilitate the folding and spreading of a sail, by mounting a support arm rotatably on the top of a mast and mounting a winding shaft on the bottom of the mast and by moving the support arm downwards and using the winding shaft to wind the said to fold it.
CONSTITUTION: The fold a said 8, wires 5, 10 are loosened by operating a winch so that a support arm 4 rotatably mounted on the top of a mast 3 is swung downwards. At the same time, a winding shaft 6 is rotated by a motor 7 to wind the sail 8 synchronously with the swing of the arm 4. The butt of a fitting emember 9 for the sail 8 is smoothly moved down by a roller 11 on a guide rail 12 on the mast 3. The winding shaft 6, which is conically shaped so that its diameter increases toward the tip, winds the trapezoidal sail 8 so that the fitting member 9 becomes parallel with the winding shaft. According to this constitution, the folding and spreading of the said 8 are facilitated and the stability of the ship is enhanced.
