PURPOSE: To provide novel compounds of salmycins showing high antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and useful as pharmaceuticals in treating infectious diseases.
CONSTITUTION: The novel compounds (salts) are represented by the formula [wherein R is =NOH, =O, -OH and -H, -NH2 and -H or =N-O-R' (wherein R' is phenyl or 1-10C alkyl); and R" is H, (hydroxy)alkyl or aminoalkyll and include, e.g. salmycin A which is the compound of the formula (wherein R is =NOH and R" is -(CH2)5-OH). The compounds of the formula can be obtained by culturing microorganism Streptomyces violacerus strain 37290 (DSM 8286) in an aqueous nutrient medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source, an inorganic nutrient source and an inorganic salt under aerobic conditions and isolating salmycins A, B, C and D.
