PURPOSE: An antitumor agent effective against various kinds of tumors, having controlling effect on the side effects of other carcinostatic, comprising purified ginsenoside obtained by fractionating total saponin of Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer by means of silica gel column chromatography.
CONSTITUTION: Total saponin obtained from the whole herb of Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer is subjected to silica gel column chromatography and developed by various kinds of solvents to fractionate many kinds of ginsenoside. A fraction (GR-A fraction) comprising Rgl of purified ginsenoside, or Rgl as a main ingredient and one or both of Rg2 and Rf, and a fraction (GR-D fraction) comprising Rb1, or Rb1 as a main ingredient and one or all of Rb2, Ra and Ro, have strong antitumor activity. The use of these fractions together with mitomycin, etc. exhibits synergistic effect and action to improve immunlolgical competence of a host, and has preventing and reducing effect on the side effects of other carcinostatics.
