A fluorescent lamp and a CCD camera are caused to scan by a robot hand, the fluorescent lamp for illuminating the surface of a vehicle body with zonal detection light and the CCD camera for taking an image of an illuminated spot. A taken image is binarized to provide a binarized image 216. By means of pattern matching, a position X1 is located at which the width of an illumination area 212 in an arrow Y direction in an inspection area g1 on the binarized image 216 is the minimum width H1. The width H0 of the illumination area 212 is measured on a measurement line L1 set at the position X1. A warning signal and an error signal are generated based on the minimum width H1 and the width H0.
