The scanning optical device scans the same scanning line by using a pair of light sources, which includes at least two light sources. The scanning optical device includes a first light source group that includes one of the pair of light sources and arranged in a first line, and a second light source group that includes the other of the pair of light sources and arranged in a second line. The first line and second line are inclined to a reference line corresponding to the scanning line so that the one light source and the other light source forming the pair scan the same scanning lines. Further, the distance between the one light source and the other light source of the pair is two or more times the distance between two light sources adjacent to each other in the first line.
