Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [Ar is aromatic group; (n) is 0 or 1; Z is group of formula II, formula III, etc., (m is 0 or 1)].
EXAMPLE: Optically active p-(p'-N,N-dimethylaminobenzylidenamino)benzoic acid (N'-2-methylbutyl)amide.
USE: A nonlinear optical material. Useful for an electrooptical device, a second harmonic generation device, a piezoelectric device, an optical waveguide, etc., a light source for optical memory or laser printer, an optical switch, etc.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced by condensing an aldehyde of formula Ar-(CH=CH)n-CHO with p-aminobenzoic acid (N'-2- methylbutyl)amide of formula IV in a solvent (e.g. anhydrous alcohol) at room temperature.
