1499645 Rotary positive displacement fluid machines CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 17 June 1976 [31 Oct 1975] 25192/76 Heading F1F [Also in Division F2] In a rotary positive displacement I.C. engine, (e.g. of the trochoidal or, as shown, nutating disctype), the piston has a compression ring seal 38 and an oil ring seal 44 located side-by-side in a common groove 40, stepped at 50, the compression ring 38 bearing against the step and being allowed to tilt slightly by radiusing the edge 60 of the step. Each ring is biased by a wavy spring 42, 48. The oil ring 44 has a double sealing edge and provides communication with an oil drainage passage 56. In a modification Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the oil ring has a single rail and has self-biasing resilient fingers formed at its inner edge.
