PURPOSE: To enhance the gas absorbing characteristics of an electrode plate by extending the cycle life characteristic of a sealed type alkaline storage battery.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolyte resistant meshing 2 is installed at least on that surface of a separator 1 which contacts a negative electrode 3, so as to equip the separator 1 with a sufficient resistance against compression, and thereby exhaustion of the electrolyte in the separator 1 in association with the charge/ discharge cycles is prevented, and the cycle life characteristics of the battery are enhanced. Also provision of the meshing 2 between the separator 1 and negative electrode 3 makes the separator 1 to be brought into contact with the neg. electrode 3 through the meshing 2, and a minute space 5 is provided between the neg. electrode 3 and separator 1 owing to this meshing 2 to generate a three-phase interface, gaseous, liquid, and solid, on the surface of the neg. electrode 3, and thereby the oxygen gas absorbing reaction is enhanced.
