Abstract:
An expansion joint (3) between existing and replaced portions of a furnace lining includes a mat of flexible compressable mineral wool or asbestos material (5) adjacent faces of the portions being initially spaced apart by decomposable blocks (4) such as wood, so that when the furnace is brought to operating temperature, the blocks (4) decompose, the lining expands and mat (5) acts to close the expansion joint and seal the lining.
