Abstract:

PURPOSE: To seal the edge face of a ceramic compact having a honeycomb structure with high reliability and closely by using a sealing medium consisting of a carbonaceous material, a silicon compd. and a silicon carbide powder and specifying the proportion of the carbonaceous material to the silicon compd. and the grain size of the silicon carbide.
CONSTITUTION: The mixture of the carbonaceous material such as carbon black, the silicon compd. such as metallic silicon powder and the silicon carbide powder having 10-100μm average grain size is used as the sealing medium. Moreover, the theoretical amount of the silicon carbide produced at the time of reacting all amount of the material equal or lower in stoichiometry amount required to produce the silicon carbide by a reacting the carbonaceous material with the silicon compd. is controlled to 10-50wt.% of the mixture. Also slurry is prepared by adding a solvent to this sealing medium, and the edge face of a honeycomb formed body is sealed with this slurry and dried, then the formed body is burned at 1700-2300°C in a nonoxidative atmosphere. The obtained structure is suitable especially for a filter capturing particulates discharged from a diesel engine.
